Important and unimportant things

The super long holidays started yesterday after work. So the phonebook comes out, which friends to go out with, what activities to plan for. But these are unimportant things to some extent. Just like crazy people queueing up to get Halo2 of X Box, obsessed computer game advocates claiming on TV they will eradicate alien forces and eventually save the world. Just like viewers of the Singapore Idol casting their votes on the 4 finalists. (Please vote Olinda Cho out, the facially pumped-up replica of Ella of S.H.E. ) Just like my obsession of playing at least one minesweeper game whenever i turn on my com. ( Best scores : Beginner - 6sec, Intermediate - 32sec, Expert - 112sec ) But to my horror, it's these unimportant things that keep the people happy. The Bush victory, the death of Yasser Arafat, politics, bilateral talks between Thai and Singapore doesn't get the people excited. These are the important things.
Arafat, a seemingly innocous, benign looking old man dies at the age of 75. A terrorist. A Nobel peace prize winner. An uncompomising millitant. A symbol of Palestinian pride and drive. He is after all a long standing figure through history of violence between the Jews and the Arabs. A pain in the ass for American presidents. Yes, ideals and philosophy are the ones that ignites wars and disputes particularly in the last century. His ideals of fighting for a better future, pushing for independence for the Palestinian state are for a good cause just like what Chechen terrorists did when they kidnapped a Russian elementary school and took children as hostages, just like the 9/11 incident. Good cause, unjustifiable violence. Desperation. Finding peace in violence. Should we be worried or at least be concerned? What is happening to the world right now?Terrorble. No answers.
So as we await the results of the Singapore idol results show on our TV sets, other things are happening around the world. The important things or the unimportant things? The bigger picture or the smaller picture? Does the bigger picture really concern us anyway? What can we do even if we are concerned? Why not get a X Box set, kill some aliens and make yourself happier?
Haha. The world is so screwed in many ways.

It's so hard, and so depressing, to care about everything that I should care about. It doesn't take much before realizing what a fucked up world we live in, and the only reason it's fucked up is because we as human beings tend to fuck everything up. We burn our bridges and bite the hands that feed us. We turn to blind faith in the face of undeniable empirical evidence, and claim that our ruthlessness is in the name of serving a higher being. We look outwards all the time and never inwards. Confucius had at least some things right - wasn't he the one that advocated starting with correcting your own wrongs, then those of the family, then the country, then the world? If everyone took just one long, hard look at whatever the hell they were doing, perhaps the world would be a much better place.

On the other hand, I do feel like a good movie marathon this weekend, to escape from all this crap. Haha.

if u read ST, e funniest section on this international paper is nt e comix pg, reallie. it's tt silly readers' forum, this sectn called "this n that". in which spore readers will write in to complain hw this particular cashier in sm supermkt deny them a 5ct change bcoz theyve no loose change. nt to 4get justifyg themselves by sayg "it's nt abt e 5ct change, it's abt customer svc! (or smthg tt sound equally "noble")". it's reallie a gd stress-reliever for takg a brk frm all tt challenging news on politics. i highly recommend it!
